Summer Party - Wild West Evening

Well done to the Committee for organising a wonderful evening!  So good in fact that we couldn't get people to go home - the cleaners had to sweep us out!!

All members made a real effort to enter into the spirit of the 'theme' with Sheriff Sybil winning best dressed on the night.

                                                                  Sybil and her posse

Joan Corker then led us in some rousing 're-written' cowboy songs before members posed with her well-made wanted poster.

Wanted!!!!  We're not sure what for!!!!

Heritage Treasure Hunt

On a typical Wimbledon evening (sun and showers!) 15 WI teams from the South Yorkshire federation gathered at The Well Church on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield for the annual Heritage Treasure Hunt.

Captain Mary and her team!

Mary's found an answer!
After a stroll along Ecclesall Road, up to the Botanical Gardens and then along to Endcliffe Park the clues were varied and interesting and we had some laughs along the way.

This time its Pat who's spotted an answer on Sharrow Vale Road
(good job the Doughnut shop was shut!)

Interesting shop-wall graffiti

Although we weren't the fastest team ( we were too busy window-shopping) we eventually arrived back at the Well Church for a much appreciated cuppa ........

......... and excellent WI tea (why else did we sign our names up!)

........ and of course a chat with other WI members.

The answers were then given out and the team results announced -

3rd Place - Warmsworth WI
2nd Place - Penistone WI
Ist Place - Thorpe Hesley WI

We were really surprised to win but delighted when each of us received a beautiful bouquet of flowers as our prize.

Our hosts Ecclesall Road WI were then given a well-deserved round of applause for organising a wonderful event followed by excellent refreshments.

Rockley Rally - 2016

Well done to Wentworth WI for organising an excellent afternoon.  The rally was well attended by members and friends and was a great way to meet up with our neighbouring WI's.

Wentworth President opened the afternoon by introducing the talented youngsters from Take2 Academy Theatre at Birdwell.

Joseph - Take2 Singers

We then had a very entertaining talk from Gerry Kersey from Radio Sheffield about the people he'd met over the years and interviewed for his radio programme.

After a well-earned cuppa and excellent 'WI Tea' we were able to engage in a spot of retail therapy at the stalls.  Our 'Jewellery and Scarves' stall was very impressive so well done to our team of helpers for all their hard work.

Jean, Pat, Sybil and Mary ...... and their wares!

Happy Shoppers!

An excellent afternoon - thanks to Wentworth WI.

June Meeting - What the Butler Saw by Michael Davidson-Paine

Despite a cold 'first day of summer', we soon warmed to the theme of our presentation for the evening given by Michael Davidson-Paine on the Life and Work of a Butler to the rich and famous.

A very smart Butler!

Michael explained how he became a Butler and the training involved in London.  He worked in both the House of Commons and Lords before working in the Royal Household for the Queen, Queen Mother and Princess Margaret.  His many stories and the variety of work involved in being a Butler were fascinating and we certainly learned a lot.  Michael also talked about his time spent in America working for a multi-millionaire educating him in the ways of the British Upper Classes.  However the lure of 'home' overcame his massive salary and he returned to work in London again.  Following lots of 'questions' from the floor, Sue Dixon gave a heartfelt vote of thanks from us all and thanked Michael for a superb presentation.

We enjoyed refreshments before the business part of the meeting led by Sue Dixon with Mary and Jean being on holiday.   Details of forthcoming events were given out including the Rockley Rally and next months summer party.

Our birthday girls received their cards and flowers ........

Birthday sisters!

......... and our raffle winner Ellen received her prize

See you at the Rockley Rally on June 18th!!

May Meeting - WI Resolutions/Silent Auction/Scones and Jam

After a poor Bank Holiday weather wise,  Mays meeting was a lovely sunny evening.

Mary talked us through forthcoming events before we discussed the WI resolutions we would  be voting on.

Sheila and Pat then busily took our bids for the many items on display at our Silent Auction before we tucked in to Scones, Jam and Cream and plenty of tea and coffee.

Our Hostess Pat getting everything ready in the kitchen

Inspecting the goods!
