AGM - Pie and Peas Evening

Retiring President Sue Dixon chaired a very efficient and full meeting of all the years activities and events.  Financially the WI is in a sound position as it is in terms of numbers with several new members joining this year.  The committee were thanked for the fantastic work they do both in preparing such a varied programme on Wednesday evenings as well as all the additional trips and visits.  Members were asked to think about joining the committee to ease the load of organisation - hopefully this is something people will do.  Jean Phillip and Mary Wilman will be sharing the role of President for the year ahead and we wish them well, whilst Sue will continue on the committee.

Then down to the serious business of 'Pie n Peas' sadly not provided this year by Pam but we toasted her health and hope to see her back at WI meetings soon.

Federation Quiz

Eighteen teams from across the Federation gathered at the Gordon Bennet Memorial Hall in Thurcroft for what proved to be a really entertaining and enjoyable evening.  Our team of Mary Wilman, Pat Shaw, Pat Henderson and Jayne Spaven had fun 'stirring-up' the grey matter to questions on a wide variety of topics.  Many congratulations to the winning High Green team with 51 points, followed by Penistone with 49 and Wentworth with 47.  We finished a creditable 4th equal with 45 points and so were fairly happy with our efforts.

We then had a wonderful tea served by members of Wickersley WI before the raffle was drawn and we could engage in some retail therapy at the WI 'shop'.

Pat Shaw won the main raffle and Jayne won as well.

It was a really fun evening and was nice to mix once again with members from other WI's as this Centenary year draws to a close.

Bring on the Pie and Peas at the AGM - sadly not cooked this year by Pam Barraclough but at least she's home from hospital now and on the way to recovery.

Best Wishes Pam.

After lunch a cookery demonstration ...... and a free spoon!

The Fair achieved its aims in showing that the WI is made up of all kinds of women of different ages and backgrounds providing a range of activities that appeal to all.
All of this is underpinned by friendship, fun and socialising - that was certainly apparent today.

Here's to the next 100 years!

September Meeting - Your favourite Recipe

President Sue Dixon gave a very comprehensive review of all the summer activities that WI members had involved themselves in as well as letting us know what "goodies" the committee had planned for us in the future.  Members were also asked to think about the AGM next month and whether they felt able to join the committee - either supporting Sybil with 'Entertainment and Outings' or supporting Jean with organising future speakers.

Vice President Joan Egley then presented birthday cards to our September Babies and best wishes were sent to Pam Barraclough and Brenda Allott as they continued to battle illness.

Then came the part of the evening members had been looking forward to ...... individual members introduced us to their favourite recipes explaining how they were made and why they were so special to them.

Recipes and Samples ready for us to enjoy!!

We then got the chance to sample an Australian 'Dip to Die For',  New Zealand 'Savoury Impossible Pie',  Sticky Yorkshire Parkin, Lemon and Coconut Loaf,  Chocolate Cake, Flapjack, Date Slices and Shortbread and Ginger biscuits!!
Oh what a difficult choice we said  ......  which one to try?  ...... oh lets have a bit of each!!
The diet can start tomorrow!

Don't they look good ....

..... wow!!  They certainly tasted good as well

Let's get the Party Started!!

Sue Dixon welcomed visitors from local WI groups plus friends of our members before a rousing rendition of Jerusalem was sung.  Brenda Allott and Pam Barraclough (absent through illness) were sent wishes for their recovery.  Music from the 1920's accompanied a most wonderful buffet with Pimms, and a table quiz on the 1920's was enjoyed as was a quiz on 100 years of the WI.

July Meeting - Pills and Potions!!

The hottest day of the year!!  As we gathered in the Trinity Centre for our July meeting with the doors and windows all open to try and get some respite from the heat, we enjoyed a really entertaining presentation from Beryl and Barbara (guides from Nostell Priory) listening to tales from 'yesteryear' regarding home-made remedies for minor ailments plus hints on housekeeping.

Beryl demonstrating how to cure a headache, toothache and earache as well as getting rid
of wrinkles at the same time!!

Barbara explaining how we'd have done the housework many years ago

After the vote of thanks and a well deserved round of applause we settled down to the business part of the meeting.  Best wishes were sent to Benda Allott, Jean Phillip, Pam Barraclough and Joan Egley who were all suffering ill-health.  The birthday girls Alison, Jayne and Marjorie received their cards then it was time for a well deserved cuppa and cake courtesy of Barbara and Beryl - and of course Strawberries!!
